Introduction to Topic and Feedback

November 3, 2017

😁 Presentation of Women in STEM and the Art of Computer Science intro went very well!

The audience responded really well to my pitch, especially because the topic is specific to me and I can personally relate.

The presentation will specifically focus on women in STEM and will use the specific example of art in computer science in order to show women that there is more to STEM fields then just numbers. Women are incredibly underrepresented in all STEM fields, and I want to begin an inspiring change.

Points to remember:
  • Introduce STEM as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics at the beginning of my Ted Talk.
  • Relate to a more broad topic once in a while to connect all audiences, such as the topic: "Pursue dreams".
  • Talk about inspiring women in STEM who should be famous.

  1. Miranda- I think this is a very important topic for you to be discussing! We need more women to be inspired to take on roles in the STEM stream. If you can breakdown the barrier for one female then I believe you have been successful!

Point Two- Top 10 Jobs for Women

Point Two- Top 10 Jobs for Women Secretary and Administrative assistants Registered Nurses Elementary and Secondary School Teachers Cashiers Nursing, psychiatric, and home health aides Retail Salesperson First-line supervisors/managers of retail sales workers Waitresses Maids and Housekeepers Customer Service Reps I was looking at this list and was surprised by it, it can be easily sorted into categories . Assistants/customer service: 1, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Healthcare- 2, 5. Teaching- 3 And then once again, this can all be narrowed down to one job description. Serving others, dedicating yourself to another's success. This inspired my point that women can be more than just assistants. They are powerful and can dedicate their time to being as successful as a man in any field they wish, my example is STEM- Computer Science.

Point 3- Men in Technology and their Success

Point 3- Men in Technology and their Success During my research, I learned a lot about the most successful people in technology. Unfortunately (although fortunate for my presentation), only 10% of the people I found were women. I also realized whenever I think of the people that inspired my favorite tech companies, they were all men. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and so on. There is not one woman that stands out in my head when I think of technology. This is why my Ted Talk is so important. I want to encourage more women to get into STEM so that it is not all men in tech when my kids are grown up.

Post-Ted Talk

Post-Ted Talk       I presented my Ted Talk yesterday. I was nervous to present to so many classes, especially about a topic that is really significant to me. However, I know a good Ted Talk needs to be about something that you are passionate about, so I opened myself up in front of everyone, without a script, just my rehearsed points. Surprisingly, I slipped right into the topic, my nerves washed away and I was able to just talk about STEM and women.      Unfortunately, unscripted meant that everything that came to mind would be said without revision. I enjoyed this until I slipped up on wording and was challenged by my audience. However, because I was passionate about my point I stood my ground even when my audience disagreed with me. It was challenging to continue, but ignoring the difficult feedback until the end of my presentation was easy after slipping back into my talk.     I was not paying attention to anything but my topic, so I...
