Point One- Why is There so Few Women in STEM?

Why there are still far too few women in STEM Research

  • Sexism is the reason that very few women are in STEM.
  • The biggest issue is that not many women are getting into university to study STEM, therefore they are not graduating and pursuing a career in the field.
  • Woman in leadership roles post graduation in STEM is just as high- they are more likely to work as contract facility or assistant professors (Statistics Canada 2009)
  • Many people believe the reason not many women are in STEM because they cannot balance their careers with their families. However, many women actually do not become successful in STEM because they are expected to take on feminine roles such as taking notes and getting coffee for their superiors and are often frowned upon when they take on more masculine roles such as assertiveness.
  • Visible minorities have it even worse, they are even more cases of discrimination in this case.
  • Women are still very much discriminated against in the field, but often do not report any forms of harassment out of fear of losing their position.
  • These factors can be fixed by:
  1. Getting more girls interested as youth.
  2. Change hiring practices.
  3. Increase mentorship.
  4. Remove discrimination and stereotypes from the workplace.
  5. Address Harassment.
  6. Include daycares in workplaces and on university campuses.

Point 3- Men in Technology and their Success During my research, I learned a lot about the most successful people in technology. Unfortunately (although fortunate for my presentation), only 10% of the people I found were women. I also realized whenever I think of the people that inspired my favorite tech companies, they were all men. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and so on. There is not one woman that stands out in my head when I think of technology. This is why my Ted Talk is so important. I want to encourage more women to get into STEM so that it is not all men in tech when my kids are grown up. 

Post-Ted Talk

Post-Ted Talk       I presented my Ted Talk yesterday. I was nervous to present to so many classes, especially about a topic that is really significant to me. However, I know a good Ted Talk needs to be about something that you are passionate about, so I opened myself up in front of everyone, without a script, just my rehearsed points. Surprisingly, I slipped right into the topic, my nerves washed away and I was able to just talk about STEM and women.      Unfortunately, unscripted meant that everything that came to mind would be said without revision. I enjoyed this until I slipped up on wording and was challenged by my audience. However, because I was passionate about my point I stood my ground even when my audience disagreed with me. It was challenging to continue, but ignoring the difficult feedback until the end of my presentation was easy after slipping back into my talk.     I was not paying attention to anything but my topic, so I...
